Hi! My name is Melissa Matheson and I teach Spanish I & II to the high school students at our Legacy location. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business/Spanish, and spent a year studying the Spanish language and culture in Valencia, Spain after university. I later went to culinary school and received a Baking & Pastry Arts Certificate. I have been happily married to my husband since 2014. We share 4 energetic kids and a senior pup, named Rocky Socks Blue. In my free time, I love to cook, travel, volunteer, and hang out with my family and friends.
Hello families! My name is Bill Davenport. I am excited to engage third graders at the Legacy Center this year! I have a rich history in education. I taught 40 years prior to retirement, most recently at Blanche Sims Elementary in the Lake Orion School system. I taught all grades K-post high school in Special Education as well as general education, but found a home in upper elementary for most of the time. During that time, I received a Master’s degree in reading instruction plus an additional 30 credits across subject matters. I’ve enjoyed tutoring and providing remedial reading, math, writing and study skill instruction with a large bag of tricks for years. I’m excited to bring my joy of learning to a new setting.
Personally, I have three adult children that continue to grow and surprise me just like in their homeschooling days. I have a love of musical theatre and both act and direct at many local community theatre groups within an hours drive of our area. One character, Charles Frohman, from the musical Finding Neverland, shares my feelings of the year, “Can you remember back when you were young? And all the simple things you did were so much fun.”
Here’s to a year of joyful discoveries and growth.
I’m Meghan Buckner. I was born and raised right here, in Oakland County, MI. I’m a long-time teacher with wonderfully varied experience, including public, private, forest, homeschool, and now hybrid. I’ve been a science instructor for THLC since the Fall of 2024. I live with my husband and four school-aged children, our two wonderful chocolate labs (the bestest puppies ever), our bearded dragon, and a variety of fish. My family and I love all things outdoors and nature-related. I enjoy reading, gardening, and taking family trips to Higgins Lake and Port Austin. Most of all, I love laughing and making memories with my children.
Joe Swoyer I am currently in my 25th year of teaching mathematics. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of math courses including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, Statistics, and Consumer Math. I spent 18 years teaching at Oxford High School and am now in my 7th year teaching at Oxford Virtual Academy. I am excited to teach at The Hybrid Learning Company this year. Over the years, I have enjoyed helping students develop their mathematical skills, build confidence, and see that math makes sense.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy traveling and taking pictures. Italy is one of my favorite places to visit, and I also enjoy exploring the western United States and photographing the places I visit. I have been married since 2005. My wife and I have one daughter, who will be entering 9th grade at Rochester Adams High School. Family, teaching, travel, and photography are all important parts of my life, and I feel very fortunate to have spent 25 years working in a profession that I truly enjoy.

I have led various types of loss groups ranging from children, teens and adults.I have had to go through some significant losses myself. Being involved with that group is a way that I love to give back. One of my passions is to help those who are struggling with emotional pain and trauma (childhood through adulthood) find hope & healing so they can thrive! For fun, I love to create art. I am an artist. I have joined an art group every month. Over the years, I have painted many items using various mediums and skills. It is a blast!
Teaching and working with children has always been special! I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring!
Hi, I’m Shanna Koester! I’m a classroom assistant and elective instructor at Legacy Hybrid and Oxford Hybrid Primary, where I’ve had the opportunity to lead electives like Wild Skills, Board Games, and Escape Room. My greatest experience comes from being a mom and homeschooling my own children through the hybrid program for seven years. I’ve seen firsthand how much this kind of learning benefits both students and families, and I love bringing that perspective into my work in the classroom. My husband and I have three kids, ages 25, 14, and 12. Our oldest is working on his master’s degree, while our younger two keep us busy with robotics, bowling, cheer, and more! Hi, I’m Ms. Ginger, and I’m excited to serve as Legacy’s U.S. History Teacher for 8th and 9th grades this year!
I have a deep love for history—not simply as a collection of dates and events, but as the story of the people, ideas, choices, and principles that have shaped our nation. My goal is to teach history with honesty and respect for the truth, while encouraging students to ask thoughtful questions, engage in meaningful conversation, and understand multiple perspectives.
I especially want my students to recognize why our nation’s founding matters and how the principles and foundations of the United States continue to shape the country we live in today. As a conservative, I value the founding principles of our nation and hope to give students a strong understanding of the ideas that helped build America, while also teaching them to think critically and consider different viewpoints.
Most importantly, I want my students to understand that history is not just about the past—it helps us understand the present and make wiser decisions about the future. My hope is that they leave my classroom with a greater appreciation for our country, a desire to seek truth, and the ability to thoughtfully engage in the conversations that shape our nation.
Outside of Legacy, my husband Steve and I have eight children, ranging in age from 5 to 31. Life is busy as I help with homework, drive our children to gymnastics, dance, football, and church youth groups, volunteer at our church, and manage the finances for my husband’s irrigation business. It’s a full life, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
In my free time, I love planning family vacations (usually Disney!), styling outfits, decorating my home, planning parties, and enjoying a good cup of coffee or tea with a friend. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of learning, conversation, and discovering the story of America together!

Ava(15), Aleister (15), and Ainsley (13) attend Dragonfly Secondary Hybrid. Annika (9) and Aliza (7) attend Oxford Primary Hybrid. After homeschooling online for so many years, we love the hybrid program.
My name is Megan Kinsler. I am the Site Supervisor at Oxford Hybrid. Prior to taking a position at OH, I worked for 8 years in Human Resources at Genesee Intermediate School District. I’ve been married to my husband Anthony for 13 years. We have two girls, Angela and Gabriella, who are enrolled in OHP. My favorite things to do (other then spending time with family) are singing and playing the piano at church. I also love riding my bike, playing volleyball, football and golf. I can’t get enough of that fresh Michigan air!
Hello, my name is Heidi Couch. I am a Kindergarten teacher at Oxford Hybrid Primary (OHP). I have been with OHP four years; my first year was spent teaching the 3rd and 4th grade split class and I have enjoyed being in the Kindergarten classroom the past three years. I hold a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University. My career in education began over 30 years ago while working at the United Cerebral Palsy Center’s Preschool program. Since then, my journey through the education world has led me to work with elementary age children in various capacities including substitute teaching (long and short term) for over seven years while raising our three children. During those years, I longed for my own classroom and the ability to form relationships with my students as well as their families. OHP has offered me that opportunity and I have cherished every moment of my time here. The flexibility our program offers both parents and children is wonderful. I love being a part of children’s early learning years, watching them explore how to learn and make friends is such a joy. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Bryan for 30 years. As I stated, we have three fabulous adult children. Jared, who lives in Florida with our beautiful daughter-in-law Kara. Leah, is a student at Oakland University’s School of Nursing, and Elliana, our youngest who is an education major at Spring Arbor University. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with our family, reading, serving in our church, exercising, singing, and being in the great outdoors. I truly enjoy working with children and am passionate about being a positive role model and influence for the next generation.
My name is Rachel Bailey. I am a mom of 3, and have 15 years of experience in education, starting in the Millington Community School District, where I gained foundational experience with diverse students. I earned my teaching degree from Bay Mills College, giving a solid foundation in both the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of teaching. My career began in Early Education, which built my holistic approach, but I later transitioned to Secondary Education to embrace the challenges of working with older students and complex subjects. A major focus is supporting students with learning differences. I am committed to creating inclusive, equitable learning environments by using differentiated instruction, assistive technology, and individualized strategies. My goal is to empower these students, helping them achieve their full potential in and out of the classroom. I began my personal and professional involvement with hybrid learning in 2018. Since then, I have actively developed and implemented models blending in-person and digital learning. I’m all about making hybrid learning awesome! I look at how we can nail the teaching, the tech, and the admin side of things to create experiences that are engaging and successful for everyone.
I am Janel Deaver, and my family has been a part of the Hybrid Primary Program since 2019. I currently work as the Site Supervisor at two of our locations, and I have taught ELA, Math, and Social Studies here. Before coming to Hybrid, I also worked as a reading tutor, ESL teacher, and reading and math intervention paraprofessional. I have also been homeschooling since 2006. After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree in English & Math, I worked both in public and private school settings. I found that the homeschool co-ops and hybrid learning groups were a better fit for our children’s education. I have 3 children enrolled with Hybrid and one that is graduating from college with their Mechanical Engineering degree this year.
Amie Gamache – Kindergarten & Electives Teacher
I’m delighted to be part of the Hybrid Learning Company, where I teach Kindergarten students, along with several elective courses at our Legacy campus. My teaching journey spans over 3 decades, including 9 years with Flint Community Schools and 18 years at local private schools. I’ve also had the privilege of being part of Legacy since we first opened our doors. In addition to my work at Legacy, I serve as adjunct faculty at Rochester Christian University, where I teach Early Childhood Education majors.
My path to Legacy has a special story behind it. In Spring 2021, I stepped away from full-time teaching and enrolled my youngest daughter in Oxford Primary Hybrid for 5th grade. That experience opened my eyes to the beauty of the hybrid homeschool model—the balance, flexibility, and individualized learning it provides. When Legacy opened in Rochester, I knew I wanted to be part of it, especially because it gave me the opportunity to teach my favorite grade: Kindergarten!
My husband, Todd, and I have been Lake Orion residents for more than 30 years. We’re proud parents of three daughters. Our oldest is an electrical engineer in Minnesota, our middle daughter recently graduated from Oakland University and is completing a year teaching English in South Korea, and our youngest is an OVA high school student.
I’m incredibly grateful to work in a model I believe in so deeply. It’s a joy to partner with families as they navigate their children’s educational journey, and I look forward to getting to know your family and being part of your child’s experience at Legacy.
I’m Misty Martin, Co-Owner and Co-Director of The Hybrid Learning Co., where I work alongside Jeanne Hotchkiss to lead and support our Legacy Hybrid and Oxford Hybrid communities.
My own journey with hybrid education started in 2019 when my kids, Danny, Devin, and Ellie, joined Oxford Hybrid—then Oxford Fusion. As a homeschool mom, I quickly came to love the balance this model offers: the flexibility of homeschooling paired with in-person learning, friendships, and community. In 2022, I stepped into the role of Co-Director as Jeanne and I launched Legacy Hybrid.
I have a background in early childhood education, and my experiences as both an educator and homeschool parent continue to shape the way I approach what we do today. One of my favorite parts of my role is working with our families and staff to create an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and excited to be here.
I live in Ortonville with my husband, Dan, and our three kids. When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me spending time with family and friends, traveling, camping, cruising, or planning our next trip to Disney. I love seeing how much THLC has grown over the years and being part of a community that gives families the best of both homeschooling and classroom learning.
Hello, My name is Jeanne Hotchkiss.
I am the Founder and Co-Director of The Hybrid Learning Company. I’m married to my wonderful husband, Lee. We have three amazing children, Dominic, Eden and Maranda- all of which I have had the privilege to homeschool over the years!
My educational background is in Social Work. As I worked on completing an internship at Daniel Axford Elementary in 2004 I was employed there as the Family Service Coordinator for the Head Start Program. This job allowed me to work closely with families of preschoolers and help meet their needs as well as coordinate programs and events for them. My background in preschool education and social work as well as the years spent homeschooling my own children were a wonderful preparation to walk through the door God opened for me to start the Hybrid Program in 2018. I truly enjoy pioneering this new pathway of education and cannot wait to watch it continue to grow as more and more families learn about the freedom and academic creativity that hands on hybrid schooling provides!
I’m Hollee Keel. In June of 2020, I retired from 30 years of teaching in Oak Park, Michigan. I taught grades 1-5, primarily first grade for the last 10 years. In the fall of 2020, I started teaching at Oxford Hybrid Primary School as I was not quite ready to “fully” retire.
I have taught 3 rd grade science, reading, math and social studies, developmental kindergarten and kindergarten science, first grade reading and fourth grade reading. It is an absolute pleasure working with smaller groups of students after teaching with 25-30 students in a class! I live in Metamora, Michigan with my husband and three dogs. My daughter is married and lives in Lapeer, Michigan with her family. During my free days, I help my 92 year -old mother by grocery shopping, doing laundry, driving to doctor appointments and playing cards. She is a retired elementary teacher as well and inspired me to follow in her footsteps. She still gives me pointers. I love to work in my perennial gardens, camp “glamp” with my husband, and sing with the worship team at Lakepoint Community church. My husband and I are currently in the process of building a new house in Metamora with some extra property for our dogs to run. Retirement is turning out to be very busy and satisfying!
