Fall 2026 Elective Offerings

We are excited to share our elective offerings for Fall 2026!

Elective registration will open in two phases:

  • Current THLC Families:
    Registration opens April 10 at 9:00 AM.
    Current families will receive an email prior to April 10 with the password required to access registration.
  • New Families:
    Registration opens April 13 at 9:00 AM.
    A password will not be required once registration opens to new families.

We encourage families to review the course descriptions below and plan ahead, as some electives may fill quickly.

*If you attempt to register for an elective class and receive a notification that the form has been turned off, this is because the class has reached capacity. If you would still like to be added to a waitlist for that class, please email Janel Deaver at j.deaver@thehybridlearningco.com to ask to be placed on the waitlist. Be sure to include the site location (Legacy Hybrid or Oxford Hybrid), the elective class name, the student name and grade, as well as your main hybrid communication email address and phone number in this email. In the meantime, please consider choosing another class in case the waitlisted class does not become available.*

Exploring Board Games

Description: Students will learn the history and strategies behind many of our childhood favorites. This class will build critical thinking skills while also giving students the opportunity to play a different board game each week. They will also learn how to create their own board game.

Description: In this class students will be presented with a STEM building challenge to encourage their critical thinking with some hands on creative fun!

Cake and Cookie Decorating

Description: In this course students will learn how to plan, prepare, design, create and deliver beautiful cakes and cookies. They will learn different frosting techniques as well as how to achieve different colors and textures of frosting. Students will also learn about what it takes to market and sell their own cakes and cookies.

Animation 101

3rd-5th Grade

Description: Join us as we explore the wonderful world of animation. We will discover the history of animation around the world, how animation is made, and making our own animations. Students will learn about various animation techniques, such as storyboarding, perspective, action blocking, and editing. By the end of the class, students will have a full flipbook story as well as completion of a digital animation project.

Description: This course will teach children how to read musical notation, play instruments such as the recorder and glockenspiel, provide an outlet to explore new genres, and give children what they need to succeed in future instrument-specific music lessons.

Exploring Nature

Description:  This class builds on children’s sense of wonder about nature through outdoor exploration! Spending time in nature can build their confidence. There’s a lot less structure than most types of indoor play and they can choose how they interact with the nature around them. This gives them practice managing their own actions and encourages creativity and imagination. Being outdoors can also teach them responsibility.

Art Techniques A

3rd-5th Grade

Description:Children learn a lot through art. As they draw, paint, and make collages, they are learning about their world (colors, shapes, and sizes of objects). When they use paints, glue, and markers, children are planning, trying out new things and solving problems. As they mix paints they learn to understand that one thing can make changes in another. This class will introduce all of the above through the use of mixed media.

Introduction to Keyboarding and Computer Basics

3rd-5th Grade

Description: This course is intended to increase student’s finger dexterity, skill, and proficiencies necessary for quick and accurate information processing on any keyboard. Correct key-stroking is emphasised. Students also demonstrate their knowledge of word processing as a labor enhancing and problem-solving tool utilizing touch keyboarding skills and document processing in order to format letters. This course provides the keyboarding basics necessary for future academic requirements and job placement. It is geared towards students who are: 1) new to keying or do not key efficiently; 2) looking to increase keying speed and accuracy; or 3) interested in learning a basic overview of word documents. Note: Students will need to bring in a laptop/OVA chromebook for this class.

Food Around the World

3-5th Grade

Description: In this class, students will dive deep into other cultures from around the world, through their rich and diverse food. Each week, we will learn about a different country, make a popular meal from their culture, and create a recipe book full of wonderful meals from around the world.

Beginner Piano

3rd-5th Grade

The course will be split into several units that cover various aspects of understanding the instrument and the music that can be created with it. Each day, students will be led through a routine of tuning, warming-up, group instruction, and independent group practicing and playing. Students will also learn basic maintenance of the instrument.

Description: This course will focus on moving through space and time. Students will learn to demonstrate the qualities of movement (space, time, force, flow, levels, directions, and pathways) as they perform a variety of fundamental locomotor (running, hopping, skipping, jumping, leading, sliding, galloping) and non-locomotor (bending, twisting, turning, rocking, swaying, balancing, stretching, pushing, and pulling) skills. Students will learn to manipulate objects with purposeful movement (throwing, catching, striking, kicking, bouncing, and rolling).  Students will participate in a variety of fitness development exercises. 

Inventors and Inventions

Description: Learn and discover “Who Made it?” Every two weeks we will learn about an inventor and one of their specific inventions. At the end of the two weeks, we will make a replica of their invention for us to take home.

Description: In this class we will discover new activities that teach and reinforce color, and shape. We will be using our fine motor skills to cut, color, and glue fun projects each week.

In this class adventurers and explorers unite in traveling across the globe to learn more about different countries and cultures. Fun activities, crafts, recipes, traditions, and maps galore!

Description: Students will be exposed to choral elements, such as ensemble singing, blend, and vocal techniques. Students will sing and perform a variety of music in both formal and informal situations, both individually and in an ensemble.

Spanish Language and Culture 1

1st-5th Grade

Description: Students will be introduced to Spanish language and culture. Themes will include food, arts, music, animals, holidays, traditions and more. Students will end the semester with a real Spanish Fiesta!  No prior knowledge necessary. Note: While language will be introduced and explored as part of this class, this is not a language mastery class.

In this class, the students will be able to express their creativity in the hands-on art of pottery. Students will learn techniques, history, and create their own pottery implementing techniques learned. 

Coding

Description: In this beginning/intermediate coding class, students will use Scratch and Code.org to increase their coding skills. They will begin with close-ended projects and work toward open-ended projects.  Note: Students will need to bring in a laptop/OVA chromebook for this class. 

*REQUIRED: A basic knowledge of keyboard, mouse, and computer use is needed for this class.

Students will participate in and explore a variety of team sports, including basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, broomball, blob tag, yard games (such as cornhole, wacky golf, and horseshoes), and other team games. They will learn the skills, rules, and strategies associated with each activity, with a focus on teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship.

Description: In this course, students will gain skills in the following areas: page design, publishing techniques, copywriting, editing, photography, record keeping, time management, teamwork, marketing, and leadership skills. Students are tasked with producing a timeless, creative, and innovative publication which will record our school’s community, memories and events. 

*This class is a full year commitment and students should plan to register for Yearbook 1B for the second semester if they took Yearbook 1A first semester.

Have you ever wondered how detectives and forensic science technicians find and examine evidence? Join us and learn how detectives investigate crime scenes in hands-on labs. Subjects such as chemistry, biology, and physics are behind the scenes in investigations, substance analysis, fingerprints, solve crimes and put those skills to use in hands-on activities in the classroom.

Health-This course addresses topics in mental health, social health, nutrition, physical fitness, substance abuse, human development, and disease prevention. The course emphasizes the physical and emotional benefits of making healthful choices and discusses consequences of unhealthful behaviors. Critical thinking is encouraged through the use of open-ended questions, assessments, and videos that present real-life situations. Built using responsive design principles, this HTML course is mobile-friendly, meets accessibility requirements, and includes expanded projects and assessments (including performance assessments.)

*Students that complete PE during Fall Semester, should plan to take Health for Spring Semester in order to receive full credits.

Description: In this course, the student will learn listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through a variety of activities, including Time to Talk sessions with a native Spanish speaker! As they engage in more advanced conversations, write paragraphs and stories, and translate to and from Spanish, students improve their vocabulary and grammar. Intense listening comprehension exercises aid in understanding more complex thoughts and subjects.
